Weird Science: How Splenda Was Discovered By Dr. Janet Starr Hull It seems that each of the artificial sweeteners has been discovered by accident, and sucralose is no exception. It is yet another strange “fortuitous discovery” of yet another chemical sweetener. In 1976, Tate & Lyle, a British sugar company, was searching for ways to blend sucrose (sugar) with laboratory chemicals. In collaboration with Professor Leslie Hough’s laboratory at Queen’s College in London, halogenated sugars were currently being tested.
